"What do you think, Minnow?" she asked the winged creature softly as she leaned against his stable door and reached forward to run her hand up and down his nose. "Do you think anyone would notice if we just took off on an adventure and didn't come back?"

The temptation to do exactly that was strong that day. Bess had spotted her brother hanging around with a couple of his friends, and though she knew that he had seen her, he hadn't said anything or even acknowledged that she was there. Why was that? What was so bad about saying hello to his sister? Had their relationship become so damaged by things over the last few years that he couldn't even handle looking her in the eye anymore?

She couldn't help but blame her father for this. Ever since he had suddenly insisted that the two of them needed to be separated for their respective educations, her relationship with her older brother had suffered greatly. What had once been the strongest bond she had was now nothing but a distant memory anymore. They no longer climbed trees together. They no longer snuck down to the lake outside the castle so that they could go for a swim on a hot summer day. There was simply nothing that might mark them as being brother and sister unless you were standing side by side on the dais with their parents during a formal event.

Bess sighed softly. "I don't suppose that you have any other solutions, do you?" The pegasus lifted his head quickly, snorting as he pawed at the ground and scattered the straw beneath him. "I'm going to take that as a no."

At least she knew that she was safely hidden away in the stables though. There was little chance of people coming in there and spotting her unless they too were in need of a safe haven. And considering that this was only the beginning of the school year, she seriously doubted that anyone else had yet reached that point. So the place would be her own...at least for now.
